Open Door Repertory Concludes 10th Anniversary Season with

"The Oldest Profession"

Open Door Repertory Company will complete its 10th anniversary season with Paula Vogel's "The Oldest Profession," running April 24 through May 18, at Hatch Auditorium, 1000 N. Ridgeland in Oak Park.

As Ronald Reagan enters the White House, five aging practitioners of the oldest profession are faced with a diminishing clientele, increased competition for their niche market and aching joints.  The New York Times says this play "Captures Ms. Vogel's most essential gift as a playwright: an ability to find transfixing warmth and vitality in subjects often employed to titillate or repel... this venturesome dramatist provides a transforming experience that keeps... theatergoers hooked."

Directed by Brett Kashanitz , "The Oldest Profession," focuses on the 50+ years of friendship these ladies share. It provides the framework to talk about the economic situation of women in a male society, the need for security in old age, the fears of death and change, and the age-old notion that a woman's best, and sometimes only, bargaining chip is her body. It looks at the family/community they've created and how they care for and support each other. They believe what they do gives them the ability to control their lives in ways that otherwise would not have been open to them.

The show is not recommended for children ages 12 and under due to some language and content.
